R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The 80th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed
  cause for celebration, and James W. Elliott of Waco marked this
  significant milestone in his life on May 6, 2017; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Brenham in 1937, Mr. Elliott completed both
  a bachelor's degree in agriculture science and a master's degree in
  education and counseling at Prairie View A&M University; after
  college, he served in the U.S. Army as a computer operator for
  missile target tracking radars; he began teaching vocational
  agriculture at Carver High School and eventually joined the faculty
  of La Vega High; over the course of a distinguished 36-year career
  with the La Vega Independent School District, he earned the
  nickname "Prof" and received multiple honors, including the
  Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas Distinguished
  Service Award; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Elliott serves on the Heart of Texas Scholarship
  Committee and the Horticulture County Extension Board, and for 20
  years, he was a member of the Selective Service Board; he also
  chaired the City of Waco Building Standards Commission Board, and
  he was a deputy voter registrar and a member of the Juvenile
  Detention Center Board in Mart; in addition, he is active in the
  Genealogy Chapter at the Waco Public Library and helped organize
  the Black Genealogy Chapter; he has worked with Habitat for
  Humanity as well; and
         WHEREAS, A man of deep faith, Mr. Elliott serves Second
  Missionary Baptist Church as deacon and as vice president of the
  Brotherhood, and he also teaches Men's Sunday School; he has been
  Basileus and Keeper of Finance for Omega Psi Phi, and as a lifetime
  member of the Prairie View Alumni Association, he is active in the
  local chapter and serves on its scholarship committee; among myriad
  accolades, he has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the
  Prairie View A&M University College of Agriculture and the Omega
  Man of the Year Award; and
         WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Elliott enjoys the love
  and support of his wife, Vern D. Elliott, and his daughter, Verma
  Lisé Elliott; and
         WHEREAS, With the passage of another year, James Elliott may
  reflect with pride on his wide-ranging accomplishments and on the
  many significant contributions he has made in behalf of his fellow
  citizens; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate James W. Elliott on his 80th
  birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
  happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Elliott as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
