R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
  a close with the passing of Rickey Clay Turner Sr. of Fort Worth on
  July 10, 2016, at the age of 56; and
         WHEREAS, The son of Eugene Turner and Hattie Newton, Rickey
  Turner was born in Mount Pleasant, where he grew up in the company
  of his brother, Eugene, and two sisters, Val and Varnasa; in high
  school, he excelled in both academics and sports, and he
  distinguished himself as a standout running back on the school's
  football team; he continued to play football while attending Austin
  College in Sherman, earning acclaim as a member of the 1981 National
  Championship team; following his graduation, he moved to Fort Worth
  and took a job with the Equitable and Eckert Drugstore; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Turner began a notable 16-year tenure with the
  Fort Worth Fire Department in September 1987, working as a swing man
  at multiple stations, and he was subsequently promoted to engineer;
  in his spare time, he pursued a master's degree in counseling and
  served as a substitute teacher; after being injured in the line of
  duty, Mr. Turner moved into fire safety education, and he taught
  children and parents and provided support for families of juvenile
  fire setters until his retirement in 2003; having died as a result
  of injuries sustained in the line of duty, he became the first
  African American to be added to the Fort Worth Police and
  Firefighters Memorial wall on March 21, 2017; and
         WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Turner drew strength from
  the rewarding marriage he shared with his wife, Sheila, and he took
  great pride in their two children, Rickey and Christina; and
         WHEREAS, Rickey Turner was a devoted family man and a
  significant asset to his community, and his commitment to his loved
  ones and to the citizens of Fort Worth will be remembered and
  admired for years to come; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Rickey Clay Turner Sr.
  and extend sincere condolences to his family and friends; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Rickey
  Turner.
