R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Deep East Texas Council of Governments and |
|
Economic Development District is marking the beginning of a |
|
yearlong 50th anniversary celebration on May 25, 2017; and |
|
WHEREAS, In November 1966, approximately 55 local government |
|
officials and leaders began the process of creating the Deep East |
|
Texas Economic Development District under the provisions of the |
|
Public Works and Economic Development Act of 1965; their goal was to |
|
promote orderly growth and beneficial development in the Deep East |
|
Texas counties of Angelina, Houston, Jasper, Nacogdoches, Newton, |
|
Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity, and |
|
Tyler; and |
|
WHEREAS, The members of the new organization unanimously |
|
elected as president Senator Charles Wilson, a former state |
|
representative who would go on to serve in the United States House |
|
of Representatives; organizational meetings continued during 1967, |
|
and the district hired an executive director in August of that year |
|
and then opened its first office; the following year, it also became |
|
a Regional Planning Commission under the laws of the State of Texas, |
|
and in 1972, it adopted its present name; and |
|
WHEREAS, Since its inception, DETCOG has facilitated |
|
community and economic development while formulating effective |
|
solutions to meet a wide variety of challenges; it has played a |
|
critical role in addressing concerns related to affordable housing, |
|
aging and disability services, public safety and emergency |
|
response, disaster recovery, information and referral services, |
|
volunteerism, transportation, and the environment; and |
|
WHEREAS, Over the past half century, DETCOG has made a |
|
profound and positive impact on the quality of life in Deep East |
|
Texas, and it is indeed fitting that its outstanding contributions |
|
be recognized as it marks this significant milestone in its |
|
history; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate the Deep East Texas Council of |
|
Governments and Economic Development District on its 50th |
|
anniversary and extend to all those associated with the |
|
organization sincere best wishes for continued success in their |
|
important work; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
