R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
  passing of Lometa Odom of Amarillo on January 27, 2017, at the age
  of 83; and
         WHEREAS, The daughter of David Hiram and Opal Lee Odom,
  Lometa Odom was born on November 29, 1933, in Washington, Oklahoma,
  and grew up with her two sisters, Margaret and Danna; in 1948, she
  moved with her family to Dimmitt, where she went on to lead the
  Dimmitt High School basketball team to three state titles; and
         WHEREAS, From 1952 to 1956, Ms. Odom attended Wayland Baptist
  University and played on the Flying Queens basketball team,
  compiling an impressive cumulative record of 115 wins and only 5
  losses; she also helped the Queens achieve two perfect 23-0
  campaigns and three Amateur Athletic Union national championships,
  and in 1956 she was named the AAU Tournament MVP; with 1,614 career
  points scored, she became the first person in the WBU team's history
  to earn AAU All-American honors for four consecutive years;
  moreover, she played on the team that captured a gold medal for the
  United States in the 1955 Pan American Games in Mexico City; and
         WHEREAS, Following her graduation, Ms. Odom enjoyed a
  rewarding career in education, teaching and coaching basketball at
  schools in Gruver, Spearman, Whitedeer, and Plainview for almost
  four decades; dedicated to her field, she was an active member of
  the PTA, the National Science Association, and the Texas Coaches
  Association; and
         WHEREAS, In recognition of her many contributions to the
  sport of basketball, Ms. Odom was inducted into the WBU Athletics,
  Helms Foundation, and National Women's Basketball Halls of Fame,
  and she was the first woman ever to be included among the honorees
  in the Texas High School Basketball, Texas Panhandle Sports, and
  Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Halls of Fame; furthermore,
  she was named one of the top 100 Texas Panhandle sports legends of
  the 20th century by the Amarillo Globe-News in 2000; and
         WHEREAS, Admired for her integrity, her exceptional talent,
  and her inspiring leadership, Lometa Odom touched countless lives
  during her journey on this earth, and she leaves behind a legacy
  that will forever be treasured by her family, friends, former
  students, and many fans; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Lometa Odom and
  extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her passing; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lometa
  Odom.
