R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The boys' basketball team of Avinger High School
  reached the pinnacle of success by winning the University
  Interscholastic League 1A state championship on March 12, 2016, at
  the Alamodome in San Antonio; and
         WHEREAS, Capping a remarkable 2015-2016 campaign in which
  they posted an impressive record of 34 wins and just 2 defeats, the
  Indians claimed Avinger High's first state championship in two
  decades and the program's third state title overall; and
         WHEREAS, During the team's triumphant journey through the
  playoffs, Avinger defeated Forestburg, Avalon, Lipan, and Campbell
  High Schools before winning in the semifinals against Happy High
  School 46-37; facing Grady High in the 1A finale, the Indians
  stormed back from an early deficit and trailed by only a single
  point at halftime; the teams traded the lead several times in the
  third quarter, but Avinger built a seven-point cushion heading into
  the final frame and eventually secured a 50-36 victory; and
         WHEREAS, Pacing the Indians in the title contest were senior
  Desmond Chism, who scored 18 points, and sophomore Grayson Early,
  who tallied 16; the team also received valuable contributions
  throughout the year from the other members of the roster: Curtis
  Henry, Alex Perry, Demionte Mitchell, John Courtney, and Brennan
  Dowell; the Avinger players were ably guided by head coach Treston
  Dowell, and they also benefited from the efforts of managers
  Christopher Carr and Kayden Sablan, athletic trainer Lane Loyd, and
  statistician Lorraine Rich; and
         WHEREAS, With their talent, commitment, and hard work, the
  Avinger Indians realized their season-long goal of winning a state
  championship, and all those associated with the team may take
  justifiable pride in a job well done; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate the Avinger High School boys'
  basketball team on winning the 2016 UIL 1A state title and extend to
  the team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
  continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
