R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Students from numerous schools in House District 19
  demonstrated their abilities at the 2017 University
  Interscholastic League Academic State Meet, making a fine showing
  in the 1A through 4A conferences; and
         WHEREAS, In the 1A computer science contest, Alex Owens
  represented Spurger High School, and he turned in a valiant effort
  to finish in 17th place; and
         WHEREAS, The 2A competitors from West Hardin High School
  excelled in numerous events; Josiah Atkinson claimed gold medals in
  the persuasive speaking, Lincoln-Douglas debate, and congress
  categories, and bronze medals were earned by fellow Oilers Jacob
  Battenfield in prose interpretation and by Brett May, who took
  third place in both the congress and informative speaking contests;
  furthermore, the school's speech team secured a first-place finish
  with its outstanding group performance; and
         WHEREAS, Also taking part in Class 2A, Andrew Harmon of
  Colmesneil High School received a bronze medal in Lincoln-Douglas
  debate, and the Colmesneil speech team placed 11th; and
         WHEREAS, Woodville High School's participation in the 3A
  competition was highlighted by the theatrical design team's
  second-place finish; in addition, the theater ensemble placed
  ninth, and Kaylee Allen scored in the top 25 in the science event;
  and
         WHEREAS, In 4A headline writing, Allan Pulliam of Jasper High
  School earned sixth place, and the school's journalism team tied
  for 17th; Ben Stone of Hardin-Jefferson High School demonstrated
  his abilities in the 4A science contest, finishing eighth; and
         WHEREAS, These talented young Texans have demonstrated
  notable skill and dedication, and they may take justifiable pride
  in participating in this premier scholastic showcase; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate the students from House District 19
  who competed in the 2017 UIL Academic State Meet and extend to them
  sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the students as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
