A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to including in the minimum attendance requirement of a |
|
|
public school student any absence of the student to participate in |
|
|
an extracurricular activity. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Section 25.092, Education Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Subsection (a-3) to read as follows: |
|
|
(a-3) In determining if a student has complied with |
|
|
attendance requirements under Subsection (a), the school district |
|
|
may not include any absence of a student from class if the student |
|
|
is absent to attend an extracurricular activity. In this |
|
|
subsection "extracurricular activity" means a voluntary activity |
|
|
sponsored by the school district and includes preparation for and |
|
|
involvement in public performances, contests, athletic |
|
|
competitions, demonstrations, displays, and club activities. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 |
|
|
school year. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
