A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to automatic admission to general academic teaching |
|
|
institutions for valedictorians of certain high school graduating |
|
|
classes. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Section 51.803, Education Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Subsection (a-3) to read as follows: |
|
|
(a-3) Beginning with admissions for the 2018-2019 academic |
|
|
year and notwithstanding Subsections (a) and (a-1), each general |
|
|
academic teaching institution shall admit an applicant for |
|
|
admission to the institution as an undergraduate student if: |
|
|
(1) the applicant is the sole valedictorian of the |
|
|
applicant's high school graduating class; and |
|
|
(2) the size of the class is too small for the |
|
|
valedictorian to be ranked at the lowest percentile that would |
|
|
qualify for automatic admission under Subsection (a) or (a-1) as |
|
|
applicable. |

SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
