A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to a government course for public school students enrolled |
|
|
at the fifth and eighth grade levels. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Subsection (c-3) to read as follows: |
|
|
(c-3) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules |
|
|
requiring students enrolled in grade levels five and eight to |
|
|
complete at least one semester course on government during those |
|
|
grade levels as part of a district's social studies curriculum. The |
|
|
course must include the essential knowledge and skills adopted for |
|
|
the government course required for high school students under |
|
|
Section 28.025(b-1)(4), adjusted as appropriate for age. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2018-2019 |
|
|
school year. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
