SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 94
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens |
|
|
of Andrews County and Texans across the state in celebrating |
|
|
March 1, 2017, as Andrews County Day at the State Capitol; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Situated on the high plains of the Permian Basin, |
|
|
Andrews County was established in 1876 and formally organized in |
|
|
1910 with Andrews as its county seat; it is named for Richard |
|
|
Andrews, an early settler and soldier in the revolutionary army, and |
|
|
the first man to die in the Texas War for Independence in 1835; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Andrews County has long been a leader in the |
|
|
ranching industry in Texas; the county also became an important |
|
|
source of cotton and sorghum with the advent of the widespread |
|
|
use of windmills; it experienced an impressive oil boom during |
|
|
the 1940s and has recently experienced the greatest period of |
|
|
growth and development in its history; the county remains one of |
|
|
the state's leading producers of oil and gas, having just |
|
|
produced its three billionth barrel of oil since 1929; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, With unprecedented support from the citizens, |
|
|
elected representatives, and civic organizations of the area, |
|
|
Andrews County hosts the most advanced secure facility for the |
|
|
disposal of Class A, B, and C low-level radioactive waste in the |
|
|
United States; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Andrews Independent School District is noted |
|
|
for academic excellence, with its teams having earned top honors |
|
|
at numerous University Interscholastic League academic |
|
|
competitions; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The people of Andrews County enjoy an abundance of |
|
|
recreational opportunities, including the Andrews County Golf |
|
|
Course, and many exemplary area parks; the county boasts an |
|
|
annual Wild, Wild West Fest and a State Championship BBQ |
|
|
Cook-off; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Andrews County on |
|
|
their many contributions to the rich history of our state and |
|
|
extend to them best wishes for a memorable Andrews County Day at |
|
|
the State Capitol; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|
|
honor of this special day. |
