SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 118
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join |
|
|
the citizens of Athens and Texans across the state in celebrating |
|
|
February 7, 2017, as Athens Day at the State Capitol; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The City of Athens was incorporated in 1856, and |
|
|
through the years, this charming East Texas town has seen |
|
|
significant growth; today, its diverse economic base includes |
|
|
industrial manufacturing and other businesses, in addition to |
|
|
farming and livestock ventures; the town's thriving education |
|
|
system is a key element of its success and productivity, and |
|
|
Trinity Valley Community College is a first-rate institute; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Athens has been proclaimed the "Original Home of |
|
|
the Hamburger" by the Texas Legislature in tribute to the role |
|
|
that city resident Fletcher Davis played in the creation of this |
|
|
American favorite; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The city's visitors and residents enjoy such |
|
|
cultural institutions as the East Texas Arboretum, the Henderson |
|
|
County Historical Museum, the Henderson County Performing Arts |
|
|
Center, and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, where a |
|
|
300,000-gallon aquarium features a variety of native Texas fish |
|
|
in their natural environment; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The City of Athens is a lovely community and an |
|
|
outstanding place in which to live, work, and raise a family, and |
|
|
residents can confidently embrace their future while continuing |
|
|
to preserve their rich and colorful past; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend the people of Athens for their many |
|
|
contributions to the growth and progress of our state and extend |
|
|
to the visiting delegation best wishes for an enjoyable Athens |
|
|
Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the city as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
