SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 149
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the citizens of Austin in celebrating February 18, 2017, as
  Verlin Callahan Day; and
         WHEREAS, On February 18, friends and family of Verlin
  Callahan are joining together to celebrate the local legend's 78th
  birthday and his recent retirement as general manager of Callahan's
  General Store after 38 years of leadership and service; and
         WHEREAS, The Callahan family settled in Central Texas in
  the 1850s, and in the ensuing years, descendants have played an
  integral role in the growth and vitality of the region; and
         WHEREAS, In 1952, Verlin's father, Earl Callahan, worked in
  partnership with three associates to establish a cattle auction near
  Austin; he later expanded the auction to include a feed mill; in
  1964, Verlin was asked to lead the business, and in 1978, the family
  built Callahan's General Store on the original auction site; and
         WHEREAS, Under Verlin's steady hand, the general store grew
  to become one of Austin's most iconic family businesses; working
  alongside many of his family members, he ensured that the store
  offered customers a unique shopping experience in a friendly
  environment; in addition to providing feed, fertilizer, western
  apparel, and hardware to clientele, Verlin worked to make Callahan's
  a popular destination for local music and community fellowship; and
         WHEREAS, Verlin Callahan is a beloved Central Texas
  resident who is admired for his outstanding civic leadership and
  his extensive service with the Austin-Travis County Livestock
  Show and Rodeo; he is a treasured citizen of Texas, and it is
  indeed fitting that he is being honored in celebration of his
  birthday and his retirement; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
  Legislature, hereby commend Verlin Callahan for his many
  contributions to his community and to the state and extend to him
  best wishes on the occasion of his retirement and his 78th
  birthday; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
