SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 228
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the Montgomery County Historical Commission in celebrating
  the dedication of an Official Texas Historical Marker for the
  Lake Creek Settlement; and
         WHEREAS, The Lake Creek Settlement was established in 1831
  as part of Stephen F. Austin's Second Colony; located between the
  west fork of the San Jacinto River and the stream known as Lake
  Creek, it was the first Anglo American settlement in what is
  today Montgomery County; and
         WHEREAS, In 1835, William W. Shepperd, a colonist from
  North Carolina, established a store that quickly became a
  community center in the growing settlement; at the site of his
  store, he later founded the town of Montgomery, which became the
  county seat shortly after President Sam Houston signed the act
  that created Montgomery County; and
         WHEREAS, Men from the Lake Creek Settlement fought in many
  of the pivotal engagements of the Texas Revolution, including the
  Battle of Concepción, the Siege of Béxar, the Grass Fight, and
  the Battle of San Jacinto; and
         WHEREAS, As the town of Montgomery grew and thrived, the
  term Lake Creek Settlement was used less frequently to describe
  the area, and the settlement was largely forgotten; it was
  rediscovered in recent decades by historians who researched
  documents in the county courthouse; and
         WHEREAS, The Lake Creek Settlement holds great historical
  significance as one of the earliest Anglo American settlements in
  Texas, and it is truly fitting that an Official Texas Historical
  Marker be erected to commemorate its importance; now, therefore,
  be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
  Legislature, hereby commend the Montgomery County Historical
  Commission and the people of Montgomery County on their
  commitment to preserving their colorful past and extend to them
  best wishes for a memorable dedication ceremony for the Lake
  Creek Settlement Official Texas Historical Marker; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of this special occasion.
