Bobbie Bolds Lander |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of the late Bobbie Bolds Lander; and |
|
WHEREAS, Bobbie Lander was born on April 16, 1925, in |
|
Menlo, Georgia, to William and Rosa Lee Bolds; the youngest of 13 |
|
children, she grew up working on her family's farm and at the age |
|
of 18, she moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for the United |
|
States Department of the Navy, which was the beginning of her |
|
long and distinguished career with the government; and |
|
WHEREAS, While in Washington, D.C., she met and married the |
|
late Fred L. Lander III, a student of the Howard University |
|
School of Law; she gladly took the responsibility of raising his |
|
two young sons and took great pride in their successes; and |
|
WHEREAS, The family moved to Dallas in 1972, and |
|
Mrs. Lander continued her career in government service by |
|
becoming the first African American woman to work as a tax |
|
auditor for the Internal Revenue Service; she later served as a |
|
secretary at Lander and Associates, her husband's law firm; and |
|
WHEREAS, At the age of 72, she fulfilled a promise she had |
|
made to her father by earning a bachelor's degree from Dallas |
|
Baptist University; a devout Christian who practiced her faith in |
|
her daily life, she was a longtime member of New Home Baptist |
|
Church, and she was active in a wide range of community |
|
organizations, including the National Council of Negro Women, |
|
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and the Dallas Association of Bench |
|
and Bar Spouses; and |
|
WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she |
|
gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued |
|
counsel will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to |
|
share in her life; and |
|
WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife and mother, and she leaves |
|
behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and |
|
many friends; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
family of Bobbie Bolds Lander; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Bobbie Bolds Lander. |
