SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 536
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize Terry Mills, who has been named the recipient of the |
|
|
2016 FBI Director's Community Leadership Award by the Houston |
|
|
field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This prestigious honor was established in 1990 as |
|
|
a way to honor individuals and organizations for their efforts in |
|
|
combating crime, terrorism, drugs, and violence in the United |
|
|
States; every year, Federal Bureau of Investigation field |
|
|
offices throughout the country select a community partner to |
|
|
receive the award; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Terry Mills is president of the Corpus Christi |
|
|
chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of |
|
|
Colored People; since assuming the post in 2009, he has been at |
|
|
the forefront of endeavors to promote the region's civil rights |
|
|
efforts, education initiatives, and youth outreach programs; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In 2016, he brought together law enforcement |
|
|
agencies, community organizations, local businesses, and schools |
|
|
for a youth summit; the conference attracted more than 4,000 high |
|
|
school students, and representatives from participating agencies |
|
|
discussed such topics as domestic violence, self-esteem issues, |
|
|
religious and cultural differences, the importance of making |
|
|
good life decisions, and how to have positive interactions with |
|
|
law enforcement; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Terry Mills has had a profound impact on the |
|
|
Corpus Christi community through his advocacy for justice and |
|
|
equality, and it is truly fitting that he receive special |
|
|
recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend Terry Mills on his many achievements |
|
|
and extend congratulations to him on receiving the 2016 FBI |
|
|
Director's Community Leadership Award; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
