SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 560
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston, who is being honored
  at the 2017 Career and Recovery Resources, Incorporated, Barrier
  Breaker Luncheon on June 27, 2017; and
 
         WHEREAS, Career and Recovery Services, Incorporated, is a
  nonprofit multiservice United Way agency whose mission is to help
  individuals identify and overcome barriers to employment; and
 
         WHEREAS, Sylvester Turner is an honors graduate of the
  University of Houston and Harvard Law School, and he practiced
  law at Fulbright and Jaworski before establishing the Houston law
  firm of Barnes and Turner in 1983; and
 
         WHEREAS, He became the 62nd mayor of Houston on January 1,
  2016, after having served in the Texas House of Representatives
  for more than 25 years; over the course of his service to the
  people of House District 139, he worked diligently to attract
  doctors to underserved areas and to increase funding for mental
  health services and for legal aid for poor Texans; and
 
         WHEREAS, He served as a member of the Legislative Budget
  Board, as vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee,
  and as chair of the House State Affairs Committee; he has also
  chaired the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and the Greater
  Houston Area Legislative Delegation; it is truly fitting that
  he receive special recognition for his achievements; now,
  therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
  Legislature, hereby commend Mayor Sylvester Turner on his many
  contributions to the people of Houston and our state and extend
  to him best wishes for continued success in all his endeavors;
  and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
