SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 694
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join citizens across the state in celebrating May 1 through 7,
  2017, as Healthy Texas Week; and
         WHEREAS, Healthy Texas Week is an annual initiative led by
  "IT'S TIME TEXAS" and is presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of
  Texas to encourage Texans to choose healthy items when they shop
  and regularly work up a sweat by getting physically active; and
         WHEREAS, Two-thirds of Texas adults and more than
  one-third of Texas children are considered overweight or obese,
  and the consequences of this public health crisis are troubling;
  being overweight or obese increases a person's risk of severe
  medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and type 2
  diabetes that affect quality of life and have widespread economic
  repercussions; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to the direct costs of medicines,
  hospital stays, and treatment, the indirect costs of illnesses
  related to being overweight or obese, such as lost wages and
  productivity, are already estimated to exceed $15 billion each
  year in Texas and are still increasing; and
         WHEREAS, During the first week of May, businesses are
  encouraged to promote their employees' health by supporting
  physical activity and healthy food choices in the workplace;
  schools are called on to celebrate physical, nutritional, and
  emotional health in classrooms, and families, friends, and
  neighbors are invited to exercise together and become
  health-minded consumers; and
         WHEREAS, A cultural shift is needed in order to make good
  health the norm for Texas communities, and Healthy Texas Week is
  helping to inspire dialogue and action among citizens at home,
  work, and school; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
  Legislature, hereby recognize May 1 through 7, 2017, as Healthy
  Texas Week and encourage all residents of the Lone Star State to
  learn more about this important campaign; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of Healthy Texas Week.
