SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 857

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Aledo High School football team, which won the University Interscholastic League 2016 Class 5A state championship; and

WHEREAS, Aledo High School won its seventh state championship by defeating Corpus Christi's Calallen High School by a score of 24-16; and

WHEREAS, These student athletes have demonstrated great talent and perseverance over the course of the year; they finished the season with a record of 16-0, and their team is ranked among the nation's top 25 high school football teams; and

WHEREAS, Under the outstanding leadership and expertise of head coach Steve Wood and his staff, the Bearcats have developed exceptional teamwork and discipline; Coach Wood's two state championships have continued the program's legacy established by former head coach and current athletic director Tim Buchanan, who led the Bearcats to five state championships, including three in a row between 2009 and 2011; and

WHEREAS, Aledo High School and the people of Aledo are proud of the Bearcats for their hard work, their impressive skills, and their fine sportsmanship; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Aledo High School football team on their successful season and extend congratulations to all on winning the 2016 Class 5A state championship; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
