SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 894
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical |
|
|
Science in Houston has improved public knowledge of health, |
|
|
medical science, and human anatomy for decades; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Established in 1969 as the Museum of Medical |
|
|
Science, the institution was located within the Houston Museum of |
|
|
Natural Science until 1996, when it opened an independent |
|
|
facility in the Houston Museum District; it underwent a |
|
|
significant expansion in 2011 to further advance its mission; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Also known as the Health Museum, this |
|
|
much-visited attraction presents scientific information in an |
|
|
entertaining manner that fosters curiosity, and it encourages |
|
|
learning through a unique interactive approach; its educational |
|
|
programs are carefully guided by members of the medical, |
|
|
academic, philanthropic, and business communities who serve on a |
|
|
committee of the board of directors; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A member institution of the Texas Medical Center, |
|
|
the Health Museum is the only Smithsonian Affiliate within the |
|
|
Houston Museum District; its programs are enriched by |
|
|
partnerships with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer |
|
|
Center, The University of Texas Health Science Center, Baylor |
|
|
College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital, Saint Luke's |
|
|
Episcopal Hospital, Park Plaza Hospital, the YMCA of Greater |
|
|
Houston, and the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, as well as community |
|
|
organizations and other like-minded groups; since its inception, |
|
|
the museum has earned numerous accolades, among them a Mental |
|
|
Health America of Greater Houston Award and a University of |
|
|
Houston Cougar 100 Award; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical |
|
|
Science has fascinated and informed nearly three million |
|
|
visitors over the course of its history, and it is indeed |
|
|
deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|
|
Legislature, hereby honor the John P. McGovern Museum of Health |
|
|
and Medical Science and commend its administrators and staff for |
|
|
excelling in their educational mission; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the museum as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
