No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
The bill would require the board of trustees of an independent school district in a county of 3.3 million and an enrollment more than 200,000 to include an issue on a referendum election before changing the name of the school district or a campus and provide a copy of the election results to the Commissioner of Education if the name change is approved.
The bill would take effect September 1, 2017, or immediately if passed with the necessary voting margins.
Local Government Impact
No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated. According to information provided by the Texas Education Agency, the referendum would likely have minimal additional local cost for a school district because a school district can combine the election to rename a district or campus with elections for other purposes.
