No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
The bill would establish a joint interim committee on judicial selection to review the Sunset Advisory Commission. The bill would require the committee to be composed of three senators, three members of the House of Representatives, two executive heads of state agencies appointed by the Governor, and three public members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor, Speaker of the House, and Governor respectively. The bill would require the committee to employ staff necessary to carry out duties and responsibilities associated with implementing the provisions of the bill and reimburse public members and committee members appointed by the Governor with funds made available by the legislature. The bill specifies that Senate and House would reimburse legislative committee member expenses. The bill would entitle a witness attending a committee proceeding under process to mileage and per diem reimbursement equivalent to a witness who appears before a grand jury in this state. The bill would require the committee to report its findings and recommendations no later than December 1, 2018 and would abolish the committee on January 1, 2019.
Based on information provided by the Sunset Advisory Commission, duties and responsibilities associated with implementing the provisions of the bill could be accomplished bill within existing resources. Minimal costs are anticipated for both the Senate and House of Representatives in implementing the provisions of the bill.
