LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 85TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

May 12, 2017

TO:
Honorable Larry Taylor, Chair, Senate Committee on Education

FROM:
Ursula Parks, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB2537 by Guerra (Relating to requiring public schools to provide information to certain students on the availability of financial assistance for postsecondary education.), As Engrossed

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Education Code to require that school counselors provide information to certain foster students regarding the availability of education and training vouchers and tuition and fee waivers to attend institutions of higher education.  Based on information provided by the Texas Education Agency, the Department of Family and Protective Services, and the Higher Education Coordinating Board, it is anticipated that the bill would result in no significant fiscal impact to the State.

Local Government Impact

The bill would result in some costs to local school districts to provide information to eligible students on vouchers and tuition and fee waivers if the district's school counselors are not already providing the information, but it is anticipated that any cost associated with the bill would small and could be absorbed within exiting resources.
