Honorable Joan Huffman, Chair, Senate Committee on State Affairs
FROM:
Ursula Parks, Director, Legislative Budget Board
IN RE:
SB2054 by West (Relating to the offense of possessing a weapon in a secured area of an airport.), Committee Report 1st House, Substituted
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
The bill would amend the Penal Code as it relates to the definition of a secured area of an airport where a person commits an offense for possession of a firearm, illegal knife, club, or other prohibited weapon, and provides an exception if the person was authorized by a federal agency to possess a firearm in a secured area. The Texas Department of Public Safety indicates that any costs associated with implementing the provisions of the bill could be absorbed within the agency's existing resources.
The provisions of the bill addressing felony sanctions for criminal offenses would not result in a significant impact on the demand for state correctional resources.
The bill would take effect September 1, 2017.
Local Government Impact
No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
