BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

 

It has been noted that the late Selena Quintanilla Pérez is considered the queen of Tejano music by many and that she is an important figure to Texans and to Mexican Americans all over the country, as her work crossed musical, cultural, and linguistic barriers. H.B. 2492 seeks to honor her memory by designating April 16 as Selena Quintanilla Pérez Day.

 

CRIMINAL JUSTICE IMPACT

 

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly create a criminal offense, increase the punishment for an existing criminal offense or category of offenses, or change the eligibility of a person for community supervision, parole, or mandatory supervision.

 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

 

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution.

 

ANALYSIS

 

H.B. 2492 amends the Government Code to designate April 16 as Selena Quintanilla Pérez Day in memory of the contributions to Tejano music of Selena Quintanilla Pérez, an award-winning singer and recording artist. The bill authorizes the day to be regularly observed by appropriate ceremonies and activities.

 

EFFECTIVE DATE

 

September 1, 2019.
