A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to an objection to the judge assigned in a criminal case.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Section 74.053(b), Government Code, is amended
  to read as follows:
         (b)  If a party to a civil or criminal case files a timely
  objection to the assignment, the judge shall not hear the case.
  Except as provided by Subsection (d), each party to the case is only
  entitled to one objection under this section for that case.
         SECTION 2.  The change in law made by this Act applies only
  to the right to object to the assignment of a judge assigned under
  Chapter 74, Government Code, on or after the effective date of this
  Act. An objection to the assignment of a judge assigned under
  Chapter 74, Government Code, before the effective date of this Act
  is governed by the law in effect on the date of assignment, and the
  former law is continued in effect for that purpose.
         SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
