A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to educational requirements for inmates who are younger |
|
|
than 18 years of age. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Chapter 493, Government Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Section 493.032 to read as follows: |
|
|
Sec. 493.032. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTAIN |
|
|
INMATES. (a) The department shall provide a course of instruction |
|
|
that includes the required curriculum provided by Section 28.002, |
|
|
Education Code, to each inmate who is younger than 18 years of age |
|
|
unless providing the instruction poses a significant safety threat |
|
|
to instructors. The Texas Education Agency shall collaborate with |
|
|
the department in providing necessary materials for instruction. |
|
|
(b) The department may enter into an agreement with the |
|
|
Windham School District for purposes of complying with this |
|
|
section. |
|
|
(c) The board may adopt rules as necessary to implement this |
|
|
section. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
