A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to the inclusion of information about the process of |
|
|
voting as part of the social studies curriculum requirements for |
|
|
public high school students. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Subsection (c-4) to read as follows: |
|
|
(c-4) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules |
|
|
requiring a high school student, as part of the social studies |
|
|
curriculum under Subsection (a)(1)(D), to be provided at least once |
|
|
with practical information about the process of voting in public |
|
|
elections, including specific information about using the type of |
|
|
voting machines used by the county in which the student is enrolled. |
|
|
The rules shall require a school district, to the extent |
|
|
practicable, to seek assistance and cooperation from the county |
|
|
election office in providing students with exposure to and |
|
|
experience using the applicable voting machine. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2019-2020 |
|
|
school year. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
