H.R. No. 629

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, Nikki Cowart has made invaluable contributions to the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District and the Greater Houston area during her more than 14 years with the American Federation of Teachers; and

WHEREAS, A passionate and creative leader, Ms. Cowart joined the American Federation of Teachers in 2004 and was named president of Cy-Fair AFT Local 6448 in 2010; under her guidance, the chapter has achieved a wide range of goals, from helping teachers secure a 45-day notice for contract nonrenewal to establishing a minimum standard for working conditions for custodians; in addition, the group partnered with First Book to have 40,000 books donated to Cy-Fair ISD, and it has consistently advocated for legislation that supports public education and its workers; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Cowart brings to her role a strong understanding of the needs of the district; in addition to having attended Cy-Fair ISD schools herself, she has raised two Cy-Fair ISD graduates and has two children in elementary school; and

WHEREAS, Through her leadership and expertise, Nikki Cowart has made a positive and lasting difference in her community, and in so doing, she has earned the respect and appreciation of countless area residents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas Legislature hereby recognize Nikki Cowart for her contributions as president of Cy-Fair American Federation of Teachers Local 6448 and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success with her important work; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Cowart as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
