R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Hannah Mandell of Wakeland High School in Frisco has |
|
|
been named the winner of the 2019 Davey O'Brien High School |
|
|
Scholarship Award, and she indeed merits special recognition for |
|
|
this achievement; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Created in 1986 by the Davey O'Brien Foundation, the |
|
|
Davey O'Brien High School Scholarship has provided more than |
|
|
$600,000 to outstanding high school seniors in the Dallas/Fort |
|
|
Worth Metroplex and beyond; the scholarship recognizes |
|
|
student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through their |
|
|
character, community service, leadership, and participation in |
|
|
varsity sports; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Hannah Mandell is the first Wakeland student to win |
|
|
the award and plans to use her $30,000 scholarship to continue her |
|
|
education and athletic career at Pomona College; ranked seventh in |
|
|
her class of 496 students, with a 5.423 grade point average, she is |
|
|
a National AP Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction; she serves |
|
|
as president of her senior class and the Mu Alpha Theta math honor |
|
|
society, and she is also a student ambassador and a member of the |
|
|
principal's advisory council and the National Honor Society; active |
|
|
in her community, she founded the Environmental Conservation |
|
|
Organization; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A gifted multisport athlete, Ms. Mandell earned |
|
|
all-state recognition after helping to lead Wakeland to the |
|
|
2017-2018 University Interscholastic League 5A girls' state soccer |
|
|
championship; additionally, she holds the school record in the |
|
|
1,600-meter run, and in 2016, she advanced to state in track and |
|
|
field as well as cross country; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Exciting challenges and opportunities await this |
|
|
exemplary young Texan, and it is a pleasure to join in recognizing |
|
|
her as she embarks on a future bright with promise; now, therefore, |
|
|

|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Hannah Mandell on her receipt of |
|
|
the 2019 Davey O'Brien High School Scholarship Award and extend to |
|
|
her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, |
|
|
be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Ms. Mandell as an expression of high regard by the |
|
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
