R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Roger E. Kirk, a psychology and statistics |
|
professor at Baylor University, was recently recognized in a |
|
feature for the American Psychological Association newsletter The |
|
Score for his remarkable 60-year career in the statistics field; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, The longest-tenured professor in Baylor's history, |
|
Dr. Kirk joined the university's faculty in the fall of 1958; he was |
|
assigned the task of developing a strong research program in the |
|
Department of Psychology, and he went on to focus his scholarly |
|
efforts on psychoacoustics, the study of the physiological effects |
|
of sound; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Kirk began directing the department's graduate |
|
program in 1969; seven years later, he organized its doctoral |
|
program for behavioral statistics, which evolved into the |
|
interdisciplinary Institute of Statistics, a joint endeavor of the |
|
schools of psychology, neuroscience, mathematics, and business; |
|
today, the institute is known as the Department of Statistical |
|
Science; altogether, he has supervised more than 20 Ph.D. students, |
|
taught thousands of undergraduates, and authored over 50 |
|
publications on topics in psychology and statistics; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through the years, Dr. Kirk has been honored with |
|
such accolades as the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award by |
|
the Texas Psychological Association and both the Charles L. Brewer |
|
and Jacob Cohen Awards from the American Psychological Association, |
|
which recognize excellence in teaching; bestowed the title of |
|
master teacher by Baylor, he is also a recipient of the university's |
|
Outstanding Tenured Teacher in the College of Arts & Sciences |
|
Award; he is concluding his exemplary career at Baylor with his |
|
retirement at the end of the spring semester in 2019; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Kirk's dedication, expertise, and commitment to |
|
excellence have benefited countless students and brought him |
|
significant renown in his profession, and Baylor University has |
|
indeed been fortunate to count him among its most esteemed faculty |
|
members; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Roger E. Kirk on his recent |
|
recognition from the American Psychological Association and |
|
commend him on his many years of service as a professor at Baylor |
|
University; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Dr. Kirk as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
