SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 85
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
join the Texas Chapter of the Academic Language Therapy |
|
|
Association in recognizing February 5, 2019, as Dyslexia |
|
|
Awareness Day at the Capitol; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Academic Language Therapy Association is a |
|
|
national organization that was founded in 1986 with the mission |
|
|
of helping to provide high quality services for students with |
|
|
dyslexia and related disorders; Texas ALTA consists of regional |
|
|
chapters across the state, and it provides support to the |
|
|
licensed dyslexia therapists and practitioners who educate and |
|
|
serve Texas families affected by dyslexia; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, One in five students in the country has a |
|
|
language-based disability, with dyslexia being the most common, |
|
|
but the 2014 Public Education Information Management System data |
|
|
indicate a wide disparity in identification rates across Texas |
|
|
school districts, which demonstrates a need for better awareness |
|
|
of diagnosis and for improved access to language therapy for |
|
|
affected students; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Texas Chapter of the Academic Language |
|
|
Therapy Association provides information and guidance to the |
|
|
State Board of Education for updating the Texas Dyslexia Handbook |
|
|
and has had a profound impact on the lives of Texas students with |
|
|
dyslexia and related disorders, and it is truly fitting that the |
|
|
organization receive special recognition for its invaluable |
|
|
services; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|
|
Legislature, hereby welcome the delegates from the Texas Chapter |
|
|
of the Academic Language Therapy Association to Austin and extend |
|
|
to all best wishes for a productive Dyslexia Awareness Day at the |
|
|
Capitol; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|
|
honor of this special occasion. |
