SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 166
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize the Literacy Center of Harlingen on the occasion of its |
|
|
2019 Celebrity Roast, which is taking place February 7, 2019; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Literacy Center of Harlingen is a nonprofit |
|
|
organization dedicated to helping adults in Harlingen and the |
|
|
surrounding areas reach their full potential by enabling them to |
|
|
acquire the English language skills they need to help themselves |
|
|
in their daily lives; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The center offers a wide range of courses, |
|
|
including English as a Second Language, Basic Literacy, Basic |
|
|
Math Instruction, and Citizenship Preparation; its GED Program |
|
|
and Computer Assisted Instruction have helped countless people |
|
|
continue their education; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This year's celebrity roast will pay tribute to |
|
|
Lupita Muniz, a Harlingen educator and community leader who has |
|
|
worked to raise awareness of environmental issues and has been |
|
|
recognized with Outstanding Environmental Teacher of the Year |
|
|
awards from three Texas governors; she is the board chair for the |
|
|
Harlingen Boys and Girls Club, has been an active fund-raiser for |
|
|
numerous charities, and helped Harlingen become an All-America |
|
|
City; she is also an avid traveler and has climbed to the top of |
|
|
the Great Wall of China; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, With such an eminent honoree, the Literacy Center |
|
|
of Harlingen is sure to have a successful 2019 Celebrity Roast; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend the Literacy Center of Harlingen on |
|
|
its outstanding work in the community and extend to its |
|
|
management and staff best wishes for a successful and memorable |
|
|
2019 Celebrity Roast; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the center as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
