SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 367
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize Sergio Alberto Tinoco for his commitment to public |
|
|
service and his success in the face of great adversity; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Sergio Tinoco was born in Pharr, Texas, while his |
|
|
mother, a resident of Reynosa, Mexico, was visiting her parents; |
|
|
he spent his early years with his mother in Reynosa, and at |
|
|
the age of six, he moved to his grandparents' home in Weslaco, |
|
|
Texas; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Sergio began working as a migrant farmworker at |
|
|
the young age of seven; by the age of 17, he was balancing his |
|
|
academics and two jobs during high school, yet he graduated in |
|
|
the top 10 percent of his class; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Determined to break a family cycle of poverty and |
|
|
migrant work, Sergio joined the United States Army; he served in |
|
|
Bosnia-Herzegovina in the aftermath of the Bosnian War and earned |
|
|
numerous commendations, and he retired after 10 years of |
|
|
distinguished service; he went on to have a successful career as |
|
|
a United States Border Patrol agent, and during his tenure, he |
|
|
has carried out his duties in the face of numerous challenging |
|
|
and dangerous circumstances; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Sergio has shared his story of perseverance in his |
|
|
award-winning book, Proud American: The Migrant, Soldier, and |
|
|
Agent; the compelling memoir chronicles his journey from a young, |
|
|
first-generation American struggling to learn English to a proud |
|
|
patriot who built a life of purpose and who found success in spite |
|
|
of a difficult background; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Sergio Tinoco is a beloved husband and father and |
|
|
a cherished member of his community; he exemplifies the highest |
|
|
ideals of public service, and his strength and resilience will |
|
|
continue to inspire others long into the future; now, therefore, |
|
|
be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend Sergio Alberto Tinoco on his many |
|
|
accomplishments and congratulate him on the exceptional success |
|
|
of his memoir; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
