CRIMINAL JUSTICE IMPACT STATEMENT

86TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

TO:

FROM:

Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB1236 by Goodwin (Relating to the carrying of handguns on the campuses of and certain other locations associated with institutions of higher education.), As Introduced

The provisions of the bill addressed by this analysis would amend various codes as they relate to the carrying of handguns on the campuses of, and locations associated with, institutions of higher education. Under the provisions of the bill,  carrying a handgun on the campus or associated locations of any institution of higher education which has prohibitions against doing so and which had provided notice as outlined under statute would be punishable as a Class A misdemeanor offense.

A Class A misdemeanor is punishable by a fine of not more than $4,000, confinement in a county jail for a term not to exceed one year, or both. This analysis assumes the provisions of the bill addressing sanctions for a criminal offense would not result in a significant impact on the demand for state correctional resources.
