R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A life dedicated to the service of his nation has |
|
drawn to a close with the death of retired U.S. Army Lieutenant |
|
Colonel Kenneth Keith Barclay of Killeen on June 29, 2021, at the |
|
age of 97; and |
|
WHEREAS, "Scooter" Barclay was born in Spokane, Washington, |
|
on May 2, 1924, to Kenneth and Alice Barclay, and he grew up with a |
|
brother, Scott; after graduating from Hill Military Academy in |
|
Portland, Oregon, in 1941, he attended Washington State University |
|
for a year before joining the U.S. Army; during World War II, he |
|
served with the famous Fighting 69th in the Pacific theater, where |
|
he saw action at Makin and Saipan and as an acting platoon leader on |
|
Okinawa; and |
|
WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Barclay completed his education |
|
at Washington State University, and in 1949, he rejoined the army |
|
and went on to serve in Germany, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, and |
|
Thailand; he was a member of the Special Forces for more than 10 |
|
years, and he commanded Company A of the 1st Special Forces Group on |
|
Okinawa, taught at the Special Warfare School at Fort Bragg, and |
|
served as principal trainer of the Royal Thai Army division |
|
deployed to Vietnam; his numerous military honors included the |
|
Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Meritorious Service |
|
Medal; he retired in 1973 at the rank of lieutenant colonel; and |
|
WHEREAS, In civilian life, Mr. Barclay was a successful |
|
Realtor for many years; he was director and president of the Fort |
|
Hood Area Association of Realtors, and he also served on many |
|
communication committees and the MLS committee; throughout his |
|
life, he remained proud of his military service, and he was active |
|
with American Legion Post 223, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9192, |
|
Veterans Corps 69th Regiment, and Chapter 77 of the Special Forces |
|
Association; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Barclay shared a rewarding marriage with his |
|
wife, Jacqueline Marie Barclay, until her death, and he was the |
|
loving father of two children, Kenneth C. Barclay II and Melinda |
|
Wyatt; with the passing years, he had the pleasure of welcoming into |
|
his family five grandsons, Trent, Trace, Trever, Ryan, and the late |
|
Kenneth Wyatt, as well as six great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Kade, |
|
Emma, Anson, Valin, and Davin; and |
|
WHEREAS, Scooter Barclay lived a rich and purposeful life |
|
devoted to his family and his country, and he leaves behind a legacy |
|
that will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
of Kenneth Keith Barclay and extend heartfelt sympathy to his |
|
family and many friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Scooter |
|
Barclay. |
