SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 31

Jerry Allen Smith |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Jerry Allen Smith, who died July 25, |
|
2021, at the age of 83; and |
|
WHEREAS, Allen Smith was born on January 31, 1938, in Fort |
|
Worth, to Charles and Ruth Smith; while attending high school in |
|
Shreveport, Louisiana, he met and married the love of his life, |
|
Sandra Lee Hunt, and the couple enjoyed more than 65 years of |
|
marriage together; they were blessed with two sons, Jerry Smith Jr. |
|
and Chuck Smith, and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren |
|
were a source of much pride and joy for him; and |
|
WHEREAS, He earned a degree in business with honors from |
|
Centenary College before earning a master's degree in |
|
professional accounting, also with honors, from The University |
|
of Texas at Austin; he went on to enjoy a successful, 37-year |
|
career with the Exxon Corporation, where he held a variety of |
|
management positions, including with the company's European |
|
subsidiaries; and |
|
WHEREAS, After his retirement from the Exxon Corporation, |
|
he taught classes in accounting at the University of Houston, |
|
Texas A&M University, and The University of Texas at Austin; he |
|
also served with distinction as a lieutenant colonel in the Texas |
|
State Guard and was active in a wide range of civic and |
|
philanthropic organizations, including the Texas Military Forces |
|
Museum, Tarrytown United Methodist Church, Habitat for Humanity, |
|
Meals on Wheels, and many others; and |
|
WHEREAS, A man of courage, wisdom, and generosity, Allen |
|
gave unselfishly to others, and he will long be remembered for |
|
his deep and abiding faith and his enthusiasm for living each day |
|
to the fullest; and |
|
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and |
|
grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished |
|
forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere |
|
condolences to the bereaved family of Jerry Allen Smith; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Allen Smith. |
