R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Residents of Lubbock are mourning the loss of
  admired District Court Judge Ruben G. Reyes, who passed away on
  December 12, 2020, at the age of 56; and
         WHEREAS, The son of Bennie and Alice Reyes, Ruben Reyes was
  born in Dimmitt on March 21, 1964; he became the first in his family
  to earn a diploma, graduating as valedictorian of Dunbar High
  School in 1983; after completing his bachelor's degree at Yale
  University and his law degree at Baylor University, he settled in
  Lubbock to practice family and civil law; and
         WHEREAS, A founding partner of Hurley, Reyes, and Guinn,
  Mr. Reyes was appointed judge of the 72nd District Court in 2006; as
  presiding judge of the county's drug court, he helped hundreds of
  people overcome the challenges of addiction and realize their
  potential; his advocacy had enormous impact across Texas and
  beyond, and he shared his expertise as chair of the National
  Association of Drug Court Professionals, as vice chair of the State
  Commission on Judicial Conduct, and as a member of the Specialty
  Courts Advisory Council; moreover, he was a mentor to numerous
  members of the legal profession; in 2018, he was inducted into the
  Stanley Goldstein Treatment Court Hall of Fame; and
         WHEREAS, Judge Reyes married the love of his life, the former
  Melanie Raff, on April 27, 1991; he took great pride in their two
  children, Ross and Hannah, and he eventually knew the joy of
  becoming "Rubes" to a treasured grandson, Denton; devoted to his
  community, he served on the boards of such organizations as New
  Legacy Home for Women and the Lubbock Dream Center, and he was an
  elder of Church on the Rock; he enjoyed travel, the outdoors,
  reading, and spending time with his family and many friends; and
         WHEREAS, Although the untimely death of Ruben Reyes has
  brought profound sorrow to all who were privileged to know him, his
  wisdom, fairness, and compassion will remain a lasting source of
  inspiration; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of the Honorable Ruben
  G. Reyes and extend sincere condolences to his loved ones; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ruben G.
  Reyes.
