R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Residents of Kaufman lost an esteemed civic leader |
|
and friend to many with the passing of Guinn Ferrell Godwin Sr. on |
|
June 21, 2020, at the age of 96; and |
|
WHEREAS, The son of W. E. and Olga Godwin, Guinn Godwin was |
|
born in Kemp on March 31, 1924, and grew up with a brother, R. B., |
|
and a sister, Bernadine; he graduated from Stubbs Community School |
|
and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II; in |
|
1951, he embarked on a remarkable career with American National |
|
Bank that would span nearly 70 years; kind and friendly, he knew his |
|
customers by name, and he served as an advisory member of the board |
|
until his death; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Godwin married the former Charlie Jack Miller on |
|
July 26, 1946, and they became the parents of a son, Guinn "Skip" |
|
Godwin Jr., and a daughter, Gail; through the years, their |
|
cherished family grew to include four grandchildren, Courtney, |
|
Garrett, Ferrell, and Jack, and three great-grandchildren, Ila, |
|
Nora, and Guinn "Trey" Godwin III; Mr. Godwin was devoted to his |
|
loved ones, and he was a wonderful friend to many, offering wise |
|
counsel, witty conversation, and steadfast loyalty; in his free |
|
time, he gardened and ran cattle; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dedicated to his community, Mr. Godwin served on the |
|
school board, and he was a founding member of the Kaufman County |
|
Veterans Memorial Park committee and a sheriff's deputy for both |
|
Kaufman and Dallas Counties; he was active with the Kaufman County |
|
Livestock Show, and in the 1980s, he led the initiative to bring a |
|
Trinity Valley Community College campus to Terrell; in addition, he |
|
was instrumental in the move of the historic P. G. Bacon building |
|
and assisted in the development of the park at its new location; he |
|
was a Mason for 65 years, and he was also a Shriner and a member of |
|
the American Legion; for more than seven decades, he was a valued |
|
congregant of the First Presbyterian Church of Kaufman; and |
|
WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of |
|
one person's life, some individuals leave their unmistakable mark |
|
on the world as they move through it, and Guinn Godwin's |
|
contributions to his community will long resonate in the lives of |
|
all who knew him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Guinn Ferrell |
|
Godwin Sr. and extend sincere condolences to his loved ones; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Guinn |
|
Ferrell Godwin Sr. |
