R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, March 25, 2021, marks the 200th anniversary of the
  start of the revolution that freed the Greek people from centuries
  of oppression under the Ottoman Empire; and
         WHEREAS, In designing a democratic government for the United
  States, the founding fathers drew on the political experience and
  philosophy of ancient Greeks, who vested the supreme power in the
  people; and
         WHEREAS, After Texas won its independence from Mexico in
  1836, the citizens of Texas derived inspiration from the principles
  of democracy and liberty forged in Greece and built on those same
  ideals when they formed their own government; and
         WHEREAS, Both American and Greek cultures value faith and a
  democratic form of government; our nations have long opposed
  tyranny, and we share a willingness to make sacrifices to advance
  the cause of freedom and equality; and
         WHEREAS, The governor of the State of Texas first recognized
  March 25 as Greek Independence Day in 1943, and the event remains
  important in many Texas communities, where those of Greek ancestry
  mark the day in churches, homes, and community centers with
  religious services and celebrations; and
         WHEREAS, Today, we join with all those who cherish freedom
  and self-determination to commemorate this historic date and to
  reaffirm the democratic vision that gave birth to our two great
  nations; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize March 25, 2021, as Greek Independence
  Day and honor the important contributions made by Greek Americans
  on this significant occasion.
