R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt by
  the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Ismael Z. Chavez of
  the McAllen Police Department, who was killed in the line of duty on
  July 11, 2020, at the age of 38; and
         WHEREAS, Ismael Chavez was born in McAllen on October 19,
  1981, to Ismael and Cynthia Chavez; he grew up with three siblings,
  Maru, Chiara, and Gladys, and he was fondly known as "Smiley" to his
  circle of loved ones, which also included his nephew, Matthew, his
  niece, Valeria, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; a
  member of the Class of 2000 at Edinburg High School, he went on to
  graduate from The University of Texas at San Antonio; he was
  employed for around 10 years as a science teacher and coach at
  Weslaco East High School, where he used humor to engage students in
  the classroom; and
         WHEREAS, Pursuing his longtime goal of working in law
  enforcement, Mr. Chavez joined the McAllen Police Department and
  graduated from its police academy in 2018; he was a devoted public
  servant, and his efforts furthered the agency's mission of serving
  and protecting the community during his time on the force; over the
  course of his tenure, he was actively involved with the McAllen
  Police Association and the McAllen First Responders Guns and Hoses
  Foundation; Officer Chavez drew strength in all his endeavors from
  his deep and abiding faith; and
         WHEREAS, Ismael Chavez was a brave and dedicated officer, a
  loving son, brother, and uncle, and a man whose kind and generous
  nature enriched the lives of everyone around him, and he will
  forever hold a special place in the hearts of those he leaves
  behind; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Officer Ismael
  Z. Chavez and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his
  passing; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ismael
  Chavez.
