R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The life of an admired civic leader drew to a close |
|
with the passing of Marilyn Ruth Cohn Schwartz on February 25, 2021, |
|
at the age of 88; and |
|
WHEREAS, The daughter of Julius and Dorothy Cohn, the former |
|
Marilyn Cohn was born in San Diego, Texas, on May 27, 1932, and grew |
|
up in Harlingen; she majored in art at The University of Texas at |
|
Austin, where A. R. "Babe" Schwartz won her heart; married on July |
|
14, 1951, they settled in Galveston to raise four treasured sons, |
|
Bob, Dick, John, and Tom; eventually, she knew the joy of welcoming |
|
12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren into her extended family |
|
circle, which also included many cousins and friends of her |
|
children, to whom she was a second mother; she and her husband were |
|
united for 67 years until his death in 2018; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Schwartz worked in a number of capacities, |
|
including substitute teacher, secretary, and insurance agent; |
|
moreover, her discipline and superb organizational skills were |
|
crucial to her husband in his career in the Texas House and Senate, |
|
beguiling even his staunch opponents with her grace and diplomacy; |
|
active for decades in the Senate Ladies Club, she served as |
|
president, secretary, and historian; she was a highly knowledgeable |
|
docent at the Governor's Mansion, and she meticulously planned the |
|
biennial Easter egg hunts on the grounds, even marshaling her grown |
|
grandchildren into stuffy bunny and chicken costumes; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community, Mrs. Schwartz served on |
|
the board of Bank of the West and championed beach conservation as a |
|
member of the Galveston Park Board of Trustees; she enjoyed using |
|
her gifts as a painter and illustrated her mother's books; to the |
|
end, she retained her wisdom, resolve, and marvelous sense of |
|
humor; and |
|
WHEREAS, Marilyn Schwartz lived a life rich in family, |
|
friends, and meaningful service, and she will forever hold a |
|
special place in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Marilyn Schwartz and |
|
extend deepest condolences to her loved ones; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Marilyn |
|
Schwartz. |
