R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The year 2021 marks the 75th anniversary of Lubbock |
|
|
Area United Way, an organization devoted to meeting the health, |
|
|
safety, educational, and financial needs of local residents; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Established on August 28, 1946, as the Lubbock |
|
|
Community Chest, this noteworthy nonprofit has since become a |
|
|
United Way affiliate that serves more than 110,000 individuals in |
|
|
the South Plains region; through partnerships with local |
|
|
organizations and coalitions, Lubbock Area United Way works toward |
|
|
a variety of crucial goals, such as promoting childhood literacy, |
|
|
providing access to mental health services, and eliminating child |
|
|
abuse and sex trafficking; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, With its many outstanding initiatives, Lubbock Area |
|
|
United Way empowers people to give back to their community both as |
|
|
volunteers and donors; its 2019 campaign raised almost $6 million |
|
|
from individual supporters, corporations, and events such as the |
|
|
LIVE UNITED Golf Tournament; moreover, the organization benefits |
|
|
area youth with the United WE READ program and the Go Blue Lubbock |
|
|
event; United Way has also played a vital role in relief efforts in |
|
|
response to the 1970 Lubbock tornado and the COVID-19 pandemic; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Among its accolades, United Way was named the 2019 |
|
|
Outstanding Volunteer Organization by the Lubbock Area Chapter of |
|
|
the Association of Fundraising Professionals; that same year, First |
|
|
Book granted more than $17,000 to United Way as part of its OMG |
|
|
Books Awards, and these funds were used to distribute books to local |
|
|
schools; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, For three-quarters of a century, Lubbock Area United |
|
|
Way has endeavored to improve the quality of life in Lubbock and |
|
|
beyond, and the organization is indeed deserving of recognition on |
|
|
this important milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of Lubbock Area |
|
|
United Way and extend to all those associated with the organization |
|
|
sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Lubbock Area United Way as an expression of high regard |
|
|
by the Texas House of Representatives. |
