R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The citizens of Jeff Davis County suffered a |
|
tremendous loss with the death of County Judge Kerith Risa |
|
Sproul-Hurley on August 2, 2020, at the age of 45; and |
|
WHEREAS, Kerith Sproul-Hurley was born in El Paso on June 25, |
|
1975, to Alice Sproul Johnson and Theodore Dale Johnson, and from |
|
the age of six, she grew up near Fort Davis at her grandparents' |
|
ranch, which was founded by her great-great-grandfather, R. S. |
|
Sproul, in 1886; during her youth, she learned the ins and outs of |
|
ranching and hunting, and she developed a deep appreciation for the |
|
natural beauty of West Texas; and |
|
WHEREAS, After graduating from Fort Davis High School, |
|
Ms. Sproul-Hurley attended Texas A&M University before completing |
|
her bachelor's degree at Sul Ross State University; she earned her |
|
law degree at Texas Tech University and started her legal career at |
|
ScottHulse PC before joining Ryan & Sanders, LLP, where she worked |
|
from 2002 to 2011; from 2011 until her death, she was counsel at |
|
Kemp Smith, LLP, in El Paso; she was a member of the El Paso Bar |
|
Association and the El Paso Estate Planning Council; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Sproul-Hurley expressed her deep love of Jeff |
|
Davis County through her years of public service, first as a county |
|
commissioner and then as Jeff Davis County judge; in addition, she |
|
and her husband, Roy Hurley, owned and operated the H. E. Sproul |
|
Ranch and Harvard Hotel & Lodge as a cattle ranch, hunting lodge, |
|
and event venue, maintaining a family legacy that spans more than |
|
130 years; and |
|
WHEREAS, Warm-hearted, strong, and generous, Kerith |
|
Sproul-Hurley lived a rich and purposeful life devoted to her |
|
family and her fellow citizens, and though she was taken much too |
|
soon, she leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all |
|
those who knew and loved her; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Kerith Risa |
|
Sproul-Hurley and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of her |
|
family: to her husband, Roy Hurley; to her stepchildren, Kelly |
|
Hurley, April Hurley Whitney and her husband, Spencer, Hunter |
|
Hurley and his wife, Kendra, and Taylor Hurley; to her |
|
step-grandchildren, Temprance and Sawyer; and to her many other |
|
relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Kerith |
|
Sproul-Hurley. |
