CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, The Rotary Club of Tyler celebrated its centennial |
|
in 2020; and |
|
WHEREAS, Chartered on May 1, 1920, under the leadership of |
|
founding president T. H. Shelby, the club still operates under its |
|
original charter today; its membership of more than 250 |
|
civic-minded individuals met in the Blackstone Hotel for many |
|
years, and it was popularly known as the Downtown Rotary Club; and |
|
WHEREAS, The group has demonstrated an exceptional |
|
commitment to education through the decades, highlighting the |
|
accomplishments of outstanding seniors from area high schools and |
|
hosting the annual Young Citizens Club banquet; moreover, it has |
|
donated funds and provided support to all of the city's major civic |
|
organizations, among them the Literacy Council of Tyler, the East |
|
Texas Symphony Orchestra, the Texas Rose Festival, and the Tyler |
|
Museum of Art; and |
|
WHEREAS, Recognizing health care needs in the community, the |
|
Rotarians have made gifts of significant impact to numerous |
|
organizations, including the Bethesda Health Clinic, the Tyler |
|
Junior College Robert M. Rogers Nursing & Health Sciences Center |
|
Dental Clinic, and The University of Texas Health Science Center at |
|
Tyler; and |
|
WHEREAS, Guided by the motto "Service Above Self," members of |
|
the Rotary Club of Tyler have played a vital role in the betterment |
|
of their community for over a century, earning the deep admiration |
|
and appreciation of their fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the 87th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|
hereby commemorate the centennial of the Rotary Club of Tyler and |
|
extend to its members sincere best wishes for continued success in |
|
their important work; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives and Senate. |
