SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 120

Ben Garza |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Dr. Ben Leonel Garza, who died February |
|
5, 2021, at the age of 82; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ben Garza was an exemplary citizen and a dedicated |
|
physician who had a positive impact on the fabric of life in his |
|
Edinburg community; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born on January 17, 1939, in Mercedes, he earned a |
|
degree from The University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 1961, |
|
and he managed his family's drug store in McAllen for a time |
|
before returning to school and earning a medical degree from The |
|
University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston; and |
|
WHEREAS, He practiced medicine for more than 45 years at |
|
the Edinburg Medical Center in partnership with two of his |
|
brothers and two other physicians; he was highly respected for |
|
his expertise as a physician and for his compassion and care for |
|
area citizens; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Garza was noted for his love of sports, and he |
|
served for many years as a team doctor for The University of Texas |
|
Pan American and Edinburg Independent School District athletic |
|
programs; he received numerous honors for his service as a |
|
physician for athletic programs, including the Rio Grande Valley |
|
Sports Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Award and The |
|
University of Texas Pan American Athletics Hall of Honor Award; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, He was active in a wide range of civic and |
|
charitable organizations, including the Edinburg Independent |
|
School District Board of Trustees, the Texas Jaycees, and the |
|
American Cancer Society; he served on the Boy Scouts of America |
|
National Committee for International Scouting, and he served for |
|
20 years in the Texas National Guard and retired as a colonel; and |
|
WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife, Patty Garza, enjoyed 32 |
|
years of marriage together; his children, Loretta, Veronica, |
|
Brooke, Brennan, Ben, Steven, and Cesar, and his eight |
|
grandchildren brought him much pride and joy; and |
|
WHEREAS, He was a source of strength to his large and |
|
loving extended family and a mentor to countless young |
|
physicians; he leaves behind memories that will be cherished |
|
forever by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
family of Dr. Ben Leonel Garza; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Dr. Ben Garza. |
