Henry Bartell Zachry Jr. |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Henry Bartell Zachry Jr., who died |
|
June 10, 2020, at the age of 86; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Henry Bartell Zachry was born in Laredo on August |
|
21, 1933, and he grew up in San Antonio; he learned the value of |
|
hard work and civic responsibility in his early years, and at the |
|
age of 16, he earned his pilot's license; he followed in his |
|
father's footsteps and enrolled at Texas A&M University, where he |
|
studied civil engineering and served in the Corps of Cadets; he |
|
was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air |
|
Force and trained as a fighter pilot, and after his military |
|
service, he returned to San Antonio and joined his father's |
|
infrastructure company; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Zachry led a highly successful and rewarding |
|
65-year career with the H.B. Zachry Company, and he became known |
|
as an outstanding leader in business and in the fields of |
|
engineering and construction; under his leadership, the company |
|
executed many monumental and historic projects in major cities in |
|
the United States and around the globe; such notable projects |
|
include San Antonio's Hilton Palacio del Rio hotel, multiple |
|
United States Embassies, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, |
|
Spain's first nuclear power plant, and the Paloma Dam in Chile; |
|
throughout his career, he received numerous accolades and |
|
industry awards for excellence, and in 2000, he was inducted into |
|
the Texas Business Hall of Fame; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Zachry leaves behind an inspirational legacy |
|
of philanthropic service; he was dedicated to serving others, and |
|
his contributions to civic institutions and charitable |
|
organizations made a positive impact on the lives of countless |
|
individuals; he gave generously in support of public school |
|
systems of San Antonio and Laredo, and his contributions to his |
|
alma mater have helped to shape the university's engineering |
|
program and the field of civil engineering; in memory of his |
|
father, he funded two President's Endowed Scholarships at Texas |
|
A&M University, and in 2005, the university named the Zachry |
|
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in honor of the |
|
Zachry family; and |
|
WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he |
|
shared 60 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mollie Zachry; |
|
they were blessed with four children, John, David, Anne, and |
|
Ellen, and their 14 grandchildren enriched his life |
|
immeasurably; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Zachry was an exceptionally accomplished |
|
citizen and was a distinguished leader in the construction |
|
industry and the field of civil engineering; he was noted for his |
|
integrity, his wisdom, his patience, and his generous spirit, and |
|
he will long be remembered with profound respect and admiration |
|
by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
family of Henry Bartell Zachry Jr.; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Henry Bartell Zachry Jr. |
