SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 485
|
|
|
WHEREAS, On May 15, 2021, the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler hosted |
|
|
an 11th birthday celebration for two of its most popular |
|
|
residents, African elephants Mac and Emanti; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in 2010, the |
|
|
pair of half brothers were relocated to the Caldwell Zoo in 2019, |
|
|
when they were eight years old; the zoo began planning years |
|
|
ahead of time for the transfer, greatly expanding its indoor and |
|
|
outdoor enclosures to accommodate two young males that are |
|
|
expected to grow to an adult size of between 10,000 and 13,000 |
|
|
pounds; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Since arriving at their new home, Mac and Emanti |
|
|
have effortlessly endeared themselves to the zoo's guests; they |
|
|
share space in their exhibit with a 43-year-old female elephant, |
|
|
Tanya, who showcased her painting skills as part of the birthday |
|
|
festivities; the celebration provided an opportunity not only to |
|
|
turn the spotlight on two of the zoo's most beloved animal |
|
|
ambassadors, but also to share information about elephants and |
|
|
help bring awareness to elephant conservation efforts; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Through their presence at the Caldwell Zoo, Mac |
|
|
and Emanti have provided visitors with the gift of being able to |
|
|
see firsthand some of Earth's largest and most magnificent |
|
|
creatures, and it is fitting to commend their handlers and the |
|
|
zoo's staff as they continue their work to advocate for this |
|
|
vulnerable species; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 11th birthdays of elephants |
|
|
Mac and Emanti of the Caldwell Zoo and extend sincere best wishes |
|
|
to all those who are involved in caring for them; and, be it |
|
|
further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the Caldwell Zoo as an expression of high regard |
|
|
from the Texas Senate. |
