Fiscal Analysis

The bill's provisions would require the commissioner distribute funds to each school district to provide at least one playground in each district that is inclusive and accessible for students with disabilities, from funds appropriated for the purpose or any other available funds.

Methodology

TEA estimates the median cost of a playground that meets the bill's requirements to be $350,000. The number of districts that do not have at least one inclusive and accessible playground is unknown.  This estimate assumes half of the 1,215 school districts would qualify for funding for an inclusive and accessible playground.  The estimated statewide cost for playgrounds would be $212,625,000 (1/2*1,215*$350,000).

Local Government Impact

School districts that do not have an inclusive and accessible playground would receive funds to offset the cost to upgrade or build a playground.
