LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 87TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

March 17, 2021

TO:
Honorable James White, Chair, House Committee on Homeland Security & Public Safety

FROM:
Jerry McGinty, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB530 by Patterson (Relating to the applicability to election judges of a prohibition on the carrying of a handgun at a polling place.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Penal Code to allow an election judge licensed to carry a handgun to do so on the premises of a polling place during early voting or on election day.

It is assumed that any costs associated with the bill could be absorbed using existing resources.

This analysis assumes the provisions of the bill would not result in a significant impact on state correctional populations or on the demand for state correctional resources.

Local Government Impact

According to the Texas Association of Counties, no fiscal impact to counties is anticipated.
