LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

CRIMINAL JUSTICE IMPACT STATEMENT

87TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

April 5, 2021

TO:
Honorable Nicole Collier, Chair, House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence

FROM:
Jerry McGinty, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB956 by Dutton (Relating to the places where certain knives are prohibited.), As Introduced

The provisions of the bill addressed by this analysis would amend the Penal Code as it relates to prohibitions against certain knives on certain premises.  Under the provisions of the bill, the carry of such knives would no longer be prohibited on certain premises.

A Class C misdemeanor is punishable by a fine not to exceed $500 (up to 180 days deferred disposition and no confinement).  This analysis assumes implementing the provisions of the bill would not result in a significant impact on the demand for state correctional resources.
